If you're still deciding between the MDA/8125 or the 8700g/8700c from either T-Mobile or Cingular respectively, this quick shootout may help you decide.
We are interested mostly from the standpoint of applications availabilty, web browsing (and associated apps such as instant messaging (IM) and all the features and functions that make the new generation of phones more like tiny PCs).
Each type of device has its own unique abilities whether it's the HTC Wizard platform, Palm Treo, Danger Hip-Top/"SideKick" or the Blackberry. In this article, we'll focus only on the MDA and 8700(x).
First things first, we have read many forum posts whereby people claim that all new phones come unlocked out-of-the-box. So let's see what happens when we put a T-Mobile sim in the Cingular 8700c..

Hi everyone. Hope you are all enjoying the holiday weekend. We received a reply email from T-Mobile tech support regarding our complaint of the slow registration problem. Here it is:
"
Thank you for contacting T-Mobile Technical Support. My name is NAME WITHHELD and I will be glad to assist you with your issue. I apologize for the delay in our response time.

OK everyone, here it is - an actual real-time (not as in RealPlayer) video of the MDA paired up with a T-Mobile Motorola V188 flip-phone.
You've already read the previous post about the comparison with the Cingular Treo 650. Well, in this side-by-side, we actually use two phones on the same network in the same test locations and guess what? The V188 has no problems getting signal in the brown spots that were mentioned in that article as well as instantaneous network registration from no signal to signal.
We are posting this video clip on Google, YouTube, and a few other video sites to ensure that we get good airplay as this issue needs resolution by T-Mobile and their "tech support" department needs to understand and see what is actually happening.
A picture is worth a thousand words? Well, we have over 5 minutes of video so you do the math!
Keep in the mind that most of the video is of the MDA searching, so from that perspective, it's not all that entertaining. But you can now see the frustrations that T-Mobile MDA users are going through.
Dear T-Mobile, Fix this problem!
(Click on the image to view the video. It's a Windows Media File .wmv)
This is an embedded version:
Here's a brief description of what you'll see in the video:
1. In the middle of the street where there's excellent coverage, the MDA is already on and searching. The V188 is off and is turned on. Immediately after startup, the V188 registers and is on the network at 4 bars.
2. After waiting a few minutes (no phone should be like this), I manually tell the MDA to find networks at which point it finds only the Cingular. (Remember that the V188 sitting next to it is already on T-Mobile)
3. We reboot the MDA. Now the phone gets on the network. Note that we were lucky in this case since this doesn't always happen either.
There were some other videos we took, but for the sanity of those around us, we limited to only this one video (for now).
We appreciate you viewing this and PLEASE tell your friends, T-Mobile, the forums you visit, etc. about this video. It is important that we are all aware of the issues affecting the MDA and that we find resolution by T-Mobile ASAP. Thanks!

We hope that our ongoing tests and semi-ramblings of the T-Mobile MDA (this may or may not apply to the Cingular 8125) signal reception and network registration issues it continues to have hasn't turned you into an anti-fan of the MDA and HTC Wizard platform. It really is an awesome device.
We continue to test this during the 30-day return period since little has been done to isolate where the weak link is:
Network -> Phone (OS or HW) -> Sim Card
The basics would indicate that under the following test conditions a conclusion can be reached...

Here's a neat little utility to help you change themes in your phone. It's free and there are people make their own skins for you to try out. Have some fun and get rid of that carrier and Windows Mobile default skin.
del.icio.us
OK, we've all seen the eBay "specials" where you pay anywhere between $2 and $20 to have someone email you something so that you can unlock your phone for multi-carrier use, right?
Well, first things first... Have you had your phone for anywhere between 60-90+ days? If not, are you a GOOD ($$$) customer?
Just call your carrier and have them do it for you for FREE. Don't waste your money in this case. More on this later...
Now, if you want to do this right now with your MDA and you're freshkill to the carrier, you most likely can't get the carrier to do it for you.

Many devices have hidden treasures. Looks like the SideKick is no different - must mean that there are game designers employed at Danger :)
Try a hidden game "SnowBored".
Go to Menu -> Settings -> About Sidekick
Then (now it gets tricky tricky):
Press Menu + Shift + 8.
Click or click & hold the scroll wheel.
Holding the wheel down moves the guy UP and releasing it moves him DOWN.
Holding it down moves the dude up and releasing moves him down.

By now you probably know that the FAA has prohibited the use of cell phones, pdas and other portable electronics devices that may impair with radio communications.
So if you have a Danger Hip-Top what do you do?
Simple! Go to Menu -> Controls -> Wireless
Doing so will turn off the wireless radio and let you play games and such. Note that the flight stewards/stewardesses may still ask you to turn it off since they probably won't know what to make of that thing with the rotating screen :)
del.icio.us
You can change the time display in the taskbar to also show date. Or, remove it all and show nothing there. Here's how:
(Requires a registry edit)
To show nothing:
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Shell\TBOpt = 0 (DWORD decimal)
To show just the clock:
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Shell\TBOpt = 1 (DWORD decimal)
To show just the date:
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Shell\TBOpt = 2 (DWORD decimal)
To show both the date and the clock:
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Shell\TBOpt = 3 (DWORD decimal)
Important Notes!
1. If you switch to the view the Analog clock the date will remain visible.
2: Even if you remove the clock, the space there is still reserved and will block any icons that are shifted over to the right.
3: The date may be blocked by the space reserved for the OK/Close button in the top right hand corner of the screen. You can fix this by adding spaces at the end of your "Short Date Format".
Restart. You may have to play around with this one a bit more...
del.icio.us
This is just like the recent tweak we posted that'll save you a bit of time when opening and closing apps by not using animations. This method applies to the Start Menu.
By default, it's set to "animate".
Requires registry edit!
To disable menu animations (sliding in/out):
HKLM\SYSTEM\GWE\Menu\AniType = 0 (DWORD decimal)
To change it back to the default (enable it):
HKLM\SYSTEM\GWE\Menu\AniType = 6 (DWORD decimal)
Restart and feel the speed! Actually, you may notice that it appears at time to take longer than before - that's because the animation masked the fact that the processor was chugging along...
del.icio.us
Just like in Windows XP, where you can use non-transition and fading effects to speed up the performance of your system, you can do the same with Windows Mobile 5.0 on your "smartphone". If you have amination on, it'll create outlines of an expanding window when you open an app.
Here's how (it's a simple regedit):
To disable window animations (like in minimizing and maximizing) change the following registry values:
HKLM\SYSTEM\GWE\Animate = 0 (DWORD decimal)
And to switch them back on:
HKLM\SYSTEM\GWE\Animate = 1 (DWORD decimal)
del.icio.us
The default vertical and horizontal scrollbars are a bit too narrow to tap and use with your finger, so you may want to make it wider. Here's how.
This is a registry edit and fairly harmless...
For the horizontal scrollbar (the one on the bottom):
HKLM\System\GWE\cyHScr = 9 (DWORD decimal)
For the vertical scrollbar (the one on the right):
HKLM\System\GWE\cxVScr = 9 (DWORD decimal)
The default thickness is 13. I changed mine to 18 and it's now much easier to use one-handed, stylus free for scrolling and tapping about.
You'll need to reboot afterwards :) (Hold down the on/off button until it prompts you to shut down, tap yes, and turn it back on)
del.icio.us
This one comes from PocketMind, makers of some pretty cool software (nothing beats PocketPutty and Total Commander, but I guess I'm of the command-line variety? :)
Their free (3 days before REQUIRED registration) MP3 player gives you another choice from the stock Windows Media player. Also note that it doesn't with with WM2003 second edition).
Additonal user notes: It does not display properly in landscape mode.
del.icio.us
Total Commander is a cool utility that's more robust than File Explorer. It's also FREE.
Just click the link below and your MDA will ask you if you want to open it when it downloads, you can say "Yes". It'll then prompt you asking if it's safe to. Say "Yes". It then installs the CAB file and voila! It's now installed and can be accessed throught the PROGRAMS folder.
Quick note to inform you that the search function is not quite working properly for some reason. We are looking into this problem. For example, we have a "hack" to enable the 802.11g radio, but it's not coming up on searches.
Sorry for the inconvenience!
Update: It's actually not a problem with the search per se, the underlying query works, but has some restrictions:
1. full text only (so, if you wanted to find "registry" but only typed "reg", it won't find the article
2. dots and other non alpha-numeric characters won't work ("802.11g" won't get a hit - and unfortunately, "802" or "11g" or "80211g" won't get results either :( )
There are a few more, but we won't get into that here. So for the meantime, please dig around. There are plenty of articles here! Including 802.11g :)
del.icio.us
If you're on-the-go alot, you may browse around and see an app you'd like to run right then and there.
Now, you can do this via ActiveSync while at your desktop, but one of the great things about the MDA Vario is that it's a lightweight PC that fits in your pocket, so why not do as much as you can on-the-go?
It would be great if the MDA had the real Windows XP under the hood with a true phone OS perhaps like one those OQO Model 01+ micro tablet PCs with nice phone that had excellent reception duct-taped to the back of it :). But that may have to wait...
In the meantime, the MDA really does make downloading apps on-the-go easy (with a few exceptions) and here's how...
del.icio.us
One of the problems with how the UI works with Windows Mobile 5 is that the "x" at the upper right hand corner of each window doesn't necessarily actually close the applications. Rather it just minimizes them (to use a Windows analogy).
So when you begin to open up all of your apps and see your MDA bogging down, it's probably time stop some (or all) of those running apps.
Did you know that if your system bogs down it negatively affects your ability to place and receive phone calls?
This is how to stop them and free up some memory...
del.icio.us
In the past, I've written briefly about scenarios where you would want to reduce the number of clicks to open up an app or invoke some other action.
Today, we'll start with a simple method by talking about how to put an application's shortcut on your start menu.
As an exmaple, we downloaded and successfully ran PocketPutty but had the app stored somewhere obscure in the MDA.
To open it up, we'd have to dig through the File Explorer into the appropriate sub-folder within My Documents - what a mess!
del.icio.us
If you ended up on this site from a search engine search only to find that you are at the main location for the site and not on topic you had searched for, here's how to find it...
The first method is to read through all the articles by clicking the links under the "Categories" section in the sidebar on the right hand side of the page. This may take a while, but you may end up enjoying reading all of the articles we're writing about.
The second method is to just list all of the articles written, period. You can do this by clicking the links under the "Monthly Archives" section - again in the sidebar. This may take a while to load since the article base grows daily.
Now, if you're lucky and you just happened on this site before new articles are published and before Google re-indexes the site, you may find the article (again in the sidebar - notice a trend here? :) listed under the "Recent Articles" section.
If you're anxious to get to your destination (and who isn't?), then the best way to find your article is to perform another search. It's at the top of the sidebar. It'll return all relevant articles matching your query. Then for future reference, click on the title of the article and bookmark it, send it to your friends, etc..

Choosing the "right" miniSD storage card for your MDA Vario or like device is actually quite easy nowadays.
There are basically two categories of chips: one is the "standard" and the other is the "ultra/fast/whateverelsemarketingtermisgiven".
The standard chips are usually around 40x read/write (these numbers will vary depending on action and between manufacturers) whereas the faster versions will usually be twice that.
Just remember this: 1x = 150KB/s (rate of data transfer)
So if a card is labeled 80x it means 80*150KB/s = 12,000KB/s = 12 MB/s
But should we really care all that much about specs? In today's pricing environment we say YES! Here's why...
del.icio.us
In many major cities around the world and especially in those with a tech-ish userbase, you may find free wi-fi. That's right, FREE!
There are now stories (and actual implementations) of Google's city-wide free wi-fi, but it requires registration of-sorts. If you're looking for semi-anonymous access, this wouldn't the way to go. Neither would the T-Mobile or Cingular's wi-fi data plans. BTW, if you are browing via EDGE, then you can forget your anonymity there too.
There may be some ways around it using anonymizing apps such as Tor, but I haven't seen any ports for it yet on the Pocket PC or other phone platforms.
del.icio.us
If you're an IM junkie, this may be for you.
One of the problems with the MSN and T-Mobile's IM (AIM Aol Instant Messenger, ICQ, Yahoo Messenger) is that it's not integrated in one panel (Microsoft had their way again with the desktop, but that's OK).
Plus, you'd have to hog up resources to open all four IM clients if you had that many accounts.
del.icio.us
There is still no repetable "fix" to the network registration problem this MDA exhibits.
So currently the only thing that is repeatable is a simple workaround. In essense, the phone ships with it automatically detecting available networks. You will instead tell it to manually register onto the T-Mobile network. We haven't heard people with the Cingular 8125 on the Cingular network have this problem anywhere in the US.

If you want to develop Windows Mobile applications or dig around in the OS, you may want to start working with an eumulator first to make sure things look proper before actually committing to changes. It's important to have a clean development environment or a sandbox of sorts to see how changes would affect the real deal.
In the days of developing HDML and the more recent WML pages and apps, it's much quicker to see changes immediately instead of waiting for responses from the wireless network pre-EDGE and faster.

Here's one app to help you edit the registry in your Windows Mobile device. (This is not a product endorsement).
From their website:
Mobile Registry Editor is an application that can be used to edit the registry of your Pocket PC or Smartphone (Windows Mobile device). With it you can remotely edit the registry using your desktop keyboard and mouse as opposed to using your stylus/keypad on your PDA or phone. It's built as a Windows application which has been modeled after Regedit (with a few extra features such as favorites, value size, column sorting etc...)
It has been tested with my Pocket PC and Smartphone on Windows XP/2000 and requires the .NET Framework 1.1 to run.

The answer is YES! These are some carpenter style jeans and it fits just fine in the pocket. (It's sticking out just to show that how narrow it is for a handheld)
You may want to take care of the screen with a screen protector or some cover however...
You probably couldn't do this as well with a BlackBerry, Treo, or SideKick...

At 195Mhz, you're not going to break any speed records. In fact, you can indeed crash your device due to straining the OS (it is a Windows device after all :). Instead of the BSOD (blue screen of death) you get the WSOD (white screen of death). Well, you don't get any prompts at the screen, so maybe it should be called the WSOD...
To overclock your MDA / 8125 to work with Skype or other apps that require more speed, try this free one:

Someone posted a nice overview of the steps involved in backing up, restoring, and upgrading your phone's ROM. Even examples of freeware apps are provided.
Please note! Performing these kinds of operations can render your phone useless (i.e. "brick") and would most definitely VOID your warranty. Proceed with caution!!!
The general overview of this overview is as follows:
SIM and CID unlock are two different things:
1. SIM unlock lets you use your phone with other carriers of the same frequency band (e.g. T-Mobile and Cingular but NOT Sprint, Nextel, Verizon)
2. CID unlock lets you upgrade your phone's ROM of three types:
a. OS (the phone's Operating System)
b. Radio (the radio antenna controlled by the OS)
c. Extended (your carrier's customization screens and UI - you know, that picture with Catherine Zeta-Jones)
Then you need the apps to help you deal with ROM transfers and they mention two:
1. lokiwiz(SIM and CID unlock)
2. aWizard ROM Utils (CID unlock only)
Don't forget to BACKUP! BACKUP! BACKUP! just in case you want to restore it. I'm pretty certain your carrier frowns upon this and would decline to take care of your phone should you mess it up real good.

With my Fujitsu Lifebook 7010D with the a/b/g card, I can usually detect only a few networks. With the MDA, I get an entire running list of more than 20 in the one location where my laptop gets only a handful.
del.icio.us
This extends Wi-Fi capablity of your MDA to faster speeds!
Note: out-of-the-box, your MDA is 802.11b compliant (e.g. 11Mbps - still pretty fast considering that EDGE is roughly 1/10th of that!). But hey, going faster is always fun!
del.icio.us
OK, let them know what's going on! After all, not every carrier is perfect. In fact, they are far from perfect with their 2-year contracts (T-Mobile is the lone carrier offering 1-year contracts), spotty reception, tricky rates/plans (have you seen Cingular's offering lately?), and of course, MAJOR issues with a certain phone (ahem - MDA - ahem) taking forever to register onto the network! Any many have hinted that T-Mobile was aware of these issues prior to the launch of the MDA. The 8125 doesn't appear to have these issues... So let T-Mobile know what's going on!
1. Phone make/model/mfg (MDA)
2. Sim chip specs
3. Firmware version (start -> settings -> system tab -> device information / version / hardware / identity)
4. Issue(s). Be sure to identify either or/both the signal reception problem and network registration problem (make sure you tell them how long it takes to register!)

Do you have a T-Mobile version of the HTC Wizard (aka "MDA")?
If so, and especially if you are located in Northern California or California in general you may have experienced the following:
You take your spankin' new MDA to a location where there's spotty to little to no reception. Your signal drops.
You go back to a place with known coverage. Your phone can't find its way back onto the network. One minute goes by, then two, then five, then thirty perhaps more.
OK. Welcome to T-Mobile!
This is a known, repeatable problem with these MDAs with T-Mobile.

This is not an advertisement. This is a how-to!
So here's tip #1. If you can take the risk of dealing with rebates that have many "outs" and potential for non-payment, then going online is the best way to get cheap deals - even deals where the stores end up "paying you" so you "make money" on these phones!
Case in point, in doing some research for a new phone and plan I came across the T-Mobile MDA (basically a smartphone that runs Windows Mobile 5.0 OS). Still a junky camera (only 1.3mp) but with touchscreen, full qwerty keyboard and hacks up the wazoo, it looked like a good upgrade from my current Sprint VM4500 (from Sanyo) that was the best phone in the US at the time (camera, video, etc..).
Onwards! Went to the local T-Mobile store and they'll sell you the phone for $299 (plus tax) if you sign up for a 2 year contract. Ouch.
The deal is this: at $250 as of 5/12/06 here in the states, it's fairly expensive. So the much-less expensive solution is the AX2 also from NextLink.
Just ordered one via eBay. Priced at $39.99 with $5.99 USPS priority mail shipping, it's one of the best deals out there for this device. A review will follow.

It's time for a decent alternative to the Sidekick and Treo!
But getting it working is an entirely different matter..
del.icio.us
Popular with the teenage demographic (sorry for those who aren't!), the "SideKick", as T-Mobiled coined it, is a great IM device with a gaming bent.
You won't be working on Microsoft documents on this device. Rather, you'll find yourself IM'ing your friends and family.
I still can't work the flip/rotate screen as I always get the device upside-down.
With a full QWERTY rubberized keyboard, it feels quite nice. Still, it's not as feature-rich as some other handhelds on the market.
One of the better features of this device is that it can browse/render real websites just as the other devices can. Funny thing is that this only has a VGA camera and NO expandable storage. You would think that kids would like to have higher quality pix they can IM to their friends.
The UI is great with this two-handed device, so if some of the software/app limitations are ok with you, this is the "hip" device to get.
It'll definitely make your kids think your "cool" :)
del.icio.us
Treo users are a loyal bunch (as are "Crackberry" fanatics as well as SideKick fans).
The Treo was the kick-butt device prior to the SideKick since it had a few apps that were beyond what the Blackberry would offer back then. But now, with an interesting offering from HTC (brilliant Taiwanese folks!) with the MDA and 8125 for example., we see a device that competes with the Treo (albeit on a different platform altogether) until now...
With the launch of the 700w, we're now talking Windows Mobile 5.0 (same as the MDA). It even has a megapixel camera! It still has a squeare display not quite as capable as the MDA's 320x240 (at least you can view Excel files a bit better with the MDA), but we'll see how it stacks up compared with the MDA.
It won't be offered in the T-Mobile carrier's line-up (no news yet), but it looks promising with Cingular!
For now, you can get them at Verizon Wireless running on its blazing fast EV-DO network. So if global roaming is not critical and you're a one-handed typer, this is for you.

OK. Why are we putting this device on this site?
It IS a cool device, though lacking in some areas, still maintains its edge over the other handhelds in certain respects.
This is perhaps the fastest push email device on the market. However, not having Wi-Fi, digital camera (not even VGA!), no expandable memory slot, voice dialing are a few of its shortcomings.
Still, if you need email quickly and your thumb is up to the task, this is the device for you!
Having demo'd the Blackberry 8700g at the local T-Mobile store, the sales rep showed me Google Maps using GPS (oh yeah, the MDA doesn't have built-in GPS :( and this is perhaps the most compelling app aside from email on any of these devices!)
Keep watching RIM's developments... This should be interesting in the coming months.
